Blass attributes the slide to problematic US fiscal management, the Trump administration’s tariff policies, and dovish expectations for upcoming Federal Reserve rate cuts. Locally, the shekel’s appreciation is bolstered by reports of progress toward a US-Iran ceasefire extension, despite the ongoing US naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, which has pushed Brent crude up to $95 per barrel.

This supplements the existing Northern Border Fund, which offers Prime + 0.25% to heavily impacted frontline businesses.

Our take: Today’s macroeconomic data paints a stark picture of a K-shaped, dual-speed economy managing both long-term sovereign wealth and immediate domestic trauma. On one end of the spectrum, the Citizens of Israel Fund’s 18.4% return and disciplined ring-fencing of $2.8 billion in gas windfalls signal robust structural maturity to foreign credit rating agencies, proving the state can execute long-term fiscal strategy even amid unprecedented wartime deficits.

However, the CBS data quantifies the pain on the ground. The domestic, non-tradable consumer economy, specifically retail, construction, and hospitality, is absorbing blunt geopolitical trauma, with micro-enterprise balances plummeting to -25.7. This severe contraction perfectly contextualizes the Treasury’s urgent rollout of the ‘Lion’s Track’ loan fund.

While offering Prime + 1.7% with state guarantees mitigates immediate insolvency risks, the government is essentially racing to front-run a wave of bankruptcies with a debt-driven band-aid. For institutional investors, the takeaway may be: Israel’s sovereign financial anchors remain rock-solid, but accumulating corporate debt and collapsing Q2 expectations in the domestic SME sector will create a prolonged drag on broader GDP growth well into 2027.

Real Estate

The Israel Securities Authority (ISA), led by Chairman Seffy Zinger, released a draft directive drastically tightening prospectus disclosure requirements for publicly traded real estate developers. The new guidelines demand unprecedented transparency on project pricing, explicit reporting on transaction cancellation rates, and the financial implications of modern marketing models.

Furthermore, developers must provide dedicated disclosures outlining the underlying profitability assumptions for early-stage urban renewal projects. Honoring the survival, ditching the siege mentality in the economy

The Jewish people’s ability to forge a hyper-modern, $500 billion economy from the ashes of 1945 is arguably the most successful sovereign wealth narrative in modern history, a stark economic anomaly when viewed against the macroeconomic realities of our regional neighbors. As the nation reflects today on its historic journey from the ashes of the Holocaust to an era of unprecedented sovereign prosperity, financial analysts turn a critical eye toward the structural inefficiencies holding back the domestic market.

For the Israeli citizen, it remains an incomplete economic liberation. To understand why the local consumer currently pays a staggering 30% premium above the OECD average for basic goods, foreign investors must look beyond standard inflationary metrics and recognize a severe structural deficiency: the domestic market remains a heavily insulated walled garden, sustained by the lingering, protectionist mental models of its socialist origins.

The early state was founded on the principles of a command economy, a paternalistic survival mechanism forged by extreme geopolitical isolation, capital scarcity, and the collective trauma of the Holocaust. The early mandate was economic independence at all costs.

This siege mentality birthed an architecture of massive state-backed monopolies, heavily subsidized agricultural syndicates, and a deeply entrenched labor bureaucracy. It was an economic model built for national survival, inherently hostile to foreign competition and completely reliant on centralized control.

However, when the macroeconomic stabilization plan of 1985 finally broke hyperinflation and opened the capital accounts, the resulting capitalist revolution was wildly asymmetric. The liberalization birthed the globally integrated, hyper-competitive tech hub that foreign investors know today, an export-facing tech and defense juggernaut operating with borderless, frictionless efficiency. But that same free-market revolution never fully penetrated the non-tradable domestic sectors. The supermarket aisles, the seaports, the commercial banks, and the domestic supply chains were deliberately left behind, shielded by political cowardice and intense lobbying.

Instead of true liberalization, the socialist mental model merely mutated. The centralized control of the early state didn’t disappear into a free market; it was simply privatized. The government sold off state assets but failed to dismantle the barriers to entry, effectively transferring absolute market power into the hands of a few private cartels, legacy conglomerates, and exclusive importers.

While Israel’s export-driven high-tech and defense sectors operate in a hyper-competitive, globalized free market, generating massive foreign direct investment (FDI), the internal consumer economy operates under an entirely different paradigm.

Domestic industries, ranging from food imports to retail and commercial banking, remain heavily concentrated. A handful of legacy conglomerates control the supply chains, insulated by complex regulatory barriers, high import tariffs, and a bureaucratic infrastructure that inherently favors domestic incumbents over foreign disruptors.

Today, this dynamic manifests as textbook regulatory capture, and its mathematical derivative, structural corruption. In any lingering socialist architecture where bureaucrats, union bosses, and legacy gatekeepers dictate the flow of capital, corruption ceases to be a bug and becomes a feature.

Nowhere is this more glaringly evident today than in the enduring stranglehold of the Histadrut (Israel’s national labor federation) and the remaining state-backed monopolies. Entities like the seaports and the Israel Electric Corporation continue to function as autonomous political fiefdoms. Shielded from true free-market forces, they normalize rampant nepotism, operational extortion, and weaponized strikes aimed at securing bloated payrolls, holding the national supply chain hostage under the guise of “workers’ rights.”

Simultaneously, private gatekeepers weaponize bureaucratic red tape and bespoke local standards to block parallel imports and stifle foreign direct investment (FDI) in the retail and commercial sectors. Together, these entities leverage their artificial moats to extract extreme rent-seeking profits and bloated EBITDA margins from a completely captive populace.

And by the way, New Jewish demographic data released ahead of Holocaust Remembrance Day tells us that there are 15.8 million Jews worldwide, with 7.2 million living in Israel - 45%. Of those in Israel, 111,000 are Holocaust survivors. A staggering shift from 1939, when the global Jewish population was 16.6 million, but only 3% lived in Mandatory Palestine.

Of the Holocaust survivors living in Israel 106,880 survivors receive official stipends. Furthermore, 31% of the survivor population requires supplemental income support to maintain a basic standard of living. With groceries 30% higher than the OECD average, many survivors also face food insecurity.

The survival and prosperity of the state on the global stage are undeniably secure, but true free-market emancipation at home remains blocked. This monopolistic extraction creates a massive deadweight loss on the economy, suffocating middle-class disposable income and stifling domestic SME growth. Until the political echelon is willing to aggressively pursue antitrust enforcement and tear down the lingering, protectionist mental models of its socialist past, the Israeli domestic economy will remain a gilded cage, where a world-class tech sector inadvertently subsidizes the rent-seeking of legacy oligopolies.

In an OECD-leading technology and defense exporter that is still actively subsidizing the survival of its founding generation, severe income disparities continue to fracture the domestic economy and the foundations of our future.

Tech & geopolitics: The GenAI arms race on antisemitism

According to a new report from Israeli tech-NGO CyberWell, generative AI (GenAI) is fundamentally altering the landscape of digital information warfare. Data reveals a massive weaponization of AI during the current geopolitical crisis.

Following the start of the US-Israel joint offensive against the Iranian regime on February 28, 2026, antisemitic and Holocaust-denial posts on X (formerly Twitter) surged by 474% compared to the daily average, peaking at 3,843 posts on day one.

CyberWell's CEO, Tal-Or Cohen Montemayor, notes that GenAI has drastically lowered the barriers to entry for hostile actors to produce synthetic, news-style propaganda. These actors are increasingly utilizing deepfakes, coded language, and AI-generated humor to systematically bypass the automated content moderation guardrails of major social media platforms.

Our take: This data highlights an accountability vacuum in the borderless era of digital warfare. As Silicon Valley algorithms fail to contain the GenAI arms race and international regulators move too slowly to counteract state-sponsored bot farms, a profound geopolitical reality emerges: Israel is the only sovereign state on earth tasked with acting as a global cyber-guardian for a multinational diaspora.

While traditional nation-states govern only within their physical borders, Israel’s security doctrine inherently extends to monitoring and combating antisemitism aimed at the 8.6 million Jews living abroad.

This is a modernized lesson of the Holocaust. The mandate of 1945 was that the Jewish people could never again rely on the benevolence of foreign governments, or today, the efficacy of Big Tech moderation teams for their protection. Just as Israel built a $500 billion economy and a world-class military to secure its physical sovereignty, it is now forced to leverage its tech sector to police the borderless frontiers of the internet.

Most alarming is the 41.3% jump in workers placed on unpaid leave (Chalat), adding nearly 48,000 furloughed employees in a matter of days to reach a total of 164,210.

Our Take: The sheer velocity of the labor market’s contraction exposes the extreme fragility of Israel’s wartime civilian economy. While the Ministry of Finance trumpets its ₪12 billion business compensation and furlough packages as a stabilizing force, a 41% spike in furloughed workers in a single week is not a sign of resilience, it is a glaring signal that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are pulling the emergency brake on payrolls. The state is essentially socializing the cost of private-sector paralysis, absorbing tens of thousands of salaries onto the public balance sheet at a time when the military is burning through nearly ₪1 billion a day.

The Bank of Israel reported a $6.27 billion drop in its foreign exchange reserves for March, bringing the total down to $228.27 billion. According to the central bank, the vast majority of this decline was driven by downward asset revaluation in global markets, which was partially offset by government foreign exchange activities. Despite the drop, reserves remain at a historically robust 37.2% of GDP.

In a parallel move to ease the domestic squeeze, the Israel Tax Authority announced the official widening of the 2026 income tax brackets. This fiscal adjustment is designed to offset inflation, effectively increasing the net pay for middle and upper middle class wage earners (specifically those earning over ₪193,800 annually) by ensuring that nominal wage increases meant to match inflation do not push workers into higher tax brackets.

Our take: On the monetary front, the Bank of Israel’s FX reserves remain a formidable, sovereign fortress. For foreign investors, the $6.3 billion March contraction should not be misread as capital flight. It was primarily a paper loss driven by global market revaluations. The fact that the BOI maintains a war chest equivalent to 37% of the national GDP proves the central bank still has immense, untapped firepower to defend the shekel and ensure systemic dollar liquidity if regional geopolitical friction reignites.

However, the juxtaposition of the ₪35 billion deficit injection against the Tax Authority’s bracket widening highlights a severe structural paradox. The government is aggressively bleeding capital to fight a multi-front war and bail out frozen businesses, while simultaneously reducing its effective income tax yield to throw a lifeline to a middle class drowning in inflation. The math simply does not align. This fiscal tightrope walk points to a severe deficit breach later in 2026, which will inevitably force the Treasury to issue a massive wave of new government debt, crowding out private investment just when the economy needs it most.

Capital Markets

Despite the outbreak of the direct Iran conflict, the temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz, and a brief global spike in oil prices to $120 a barrel, the local bond market demonstrated remarkable resilience. Shekel-denominated short term government bonds actually saw slight gains of up to 0.3%, defying expectations of a severe, risk off sell-off.

Variable-rate corporate bonds also rose up to 1%, supported by shifting interest rate expectations. Analysts at Migdal Capital Markets note that the consensus for Bank of Israel rate cuts has been pushed back significantly, with markets now pricing in a hold until at least August, aiming for a 3.5% rate by year-end. Long-term government bonds, however, took a hit, falling 1.7% as yield curves adjusted to the long-term inflationary reality.

Our take: The Israeli bond market is currently exposing a sharp divergence between short-term institutional buffering and long-term macroeconomic reality. While local pension funds swooped in to buy the short-term dip, acting as a massive shock absorber against geopolitical panic, the 1.7% drop in long-term government bonds tells the real story. The yield curve is actively adjusting to price in the higher for longer inflation premium triggered by $120 oil and supply chain chokes in the Strait of Hormuz. With Bank of Israel rate cuts pushed back to at least August, the cost of capital will remain restrictively high, meaning highly leveraged real estate developers and corporate borrowers are staring down a brutal refinancing wall in H2 2026.

A major executive shakeup may point to a shift in the local financial sector. Israel Post, recently privatized under the ownership of the Milgam consortium, has appointed Ronen Galperin as the new CEO of Postal Finance, its financial arm. Galperin previously served as the CEO of El Al’s frequent flyer program, where he managed the highly lucrative FlyCard credit operation, generating ₪170 million in net profit and driving the subsidiary’s valuation to roughly ₪2.7 billion.

Our take: The executive shakeup at Israel Post could potentially be a blinking red warning light to the domestic banking sector. Under Milgam’s new private ownership, the Post could leverage its sprawling physical retail footprint and vast customer database into a high-margin fintech operation.

By poaching Ronen Galperin, the architect who built El Al’s FlyCard into a ₪2.7 billion consumer credit juggernaut, Milgam is signaling its intent to bypass legacy banking. Sounds like more than a modernization of the national mail service - possibly the groundwork for a bank poised to launch a highly competitive assault on consumer credit margins.
